Jan. 7th, 2020 06:01 pmLan Wangji has the ability to play music that can alter moods. Most specifically, he can play music that calms the spirit, lowers agitation, and cleanses evil.
How much of an effect this has on your character, and what that effect looks like, is up to you: even in his canon, there are characters that are immune to the effects.

BACKGROUND:
Wiki
Important Notes: The wiki details events as they happened in the Novel version that the show is based on. I couldn't find a wiki for only the live-action version. There are some notable details, such as the fact that he and Wei Wuxian never officially have a sexual relationship (Chinese censorship laws), and some details have been changed. But the core of the history is the same. If you'd rather me write out a new summary just for the show, let me know. His personality is definitely different, but I'll be covering that below.
PERSONALITY:
Lan Zhan, Courtesy name Lan Wangji, is a stoic man whose life is centred around his principles and his constant fight for self-restraint. Outwardly, especially to those that don't know him well, he looks almost devoid of emotion. His stony expression rarely allows for hints of emotion, and he speaks as little as he can get away with. If he can say it in four words, he won't use more. He comes off as cold and aloof, and thus people often also project an aura of arrogance onto him. All of this links back to his training and carefully cultivated self-restraint.
However, it masks a heart of deep passion and conviction. His restraint doesn't come from the fact that he has no feelings, it comes from the fact that he has such deep and overwhelming ones that giving in to his emotions would be disastrous. Though he looks impassive, he harbours deep and unshakable love, often against his will. His sense of loyalty extends long after death - he went to his Mother's house every month for years after she died, regardless of the fact that she would never step out of it again. He searched for Wei Ying for 16 years after his disappearance, despite no sign of his body or soul anywhere on Earth. Once his love is given, it is never retracted, even if the object of his affection strays from the righteous path he has dedicated his whole life to.
His temper is quick and merciless, which is one of the reasons that his restraint is so carefully guarded. But in the moments where it can be broken - usually by Wei Wuxian teasing him - he will lash out against all reason, quite literally drawing his sword and possibly blood in the process. His temper is something he is deeply ashamed of, as is any strong emotion or reaction, which is why when he was younger even the first fledgling feelings of love were enough to deeply frustrate him. Control, reason, restraint - these are the values that govern him, and they are constantly at war with the turmoil of emotion beneath.
Now in his thirties, sixteen years of grief have tempered him. There seems to always be an edge of sorrow around him, and years of meditation and practice have granted him an honest patience that didn't exist in his teens. That turmoil is still there, but age has softened it. He still seems a being of ice and stone to those that don't know him, still speaks little and divulges less, but having to take care of the junior members of his clan has given him a softer tone than he had before.
He no longer knows if right and wrong can so easily be determined - if men can see what is black and what is white at a glance. His righteousness betrayed him and made him lose the person he cared for most in the world. Justice is still his primary virtue, but Loyalty has grown strong behind it. He needs the truth, now, to condemn - not just rash action and the word of the world. The world can be utterly wrong, and he knows it all too well.
Where Lan Wangji is most confident is in his abilities, and for good reason. Though he may be terrible at communication and maintaining connections and conversations with people, he is incredible at fighting and cultivating his spiritual energy. He is one of the strongest people in his world, able to face dangers that most cultivators wouldn't even hope to survive, let alone overcome. His calm and poise in battle is the envy of everyone. He is not afraid of death, not afraid to get hurt, and does not weigh the lives of others as lesser or greater depending on their station. He will help anyone, and everyone, without question, if they are in trouble. This is his purpose.
POWER:
GOLDEN CORE CULTIVATION
Like all cultivators in his series, Lan Zhan comes with a basic set of powers that centre around his 'golden core', which is essentially his spiritual energy. Lan Zhan is one of the strongest cultivators in his time period, and thus his cultivation techniques are very high level. Translated to MoM terms, this gives him the following abilities
- ENHANCED HEALING / LONGEVITY: Lan Zhan heals at about four times the speed that a typical human would heal, and could potentially live several hundred years (though obviously doesn't matter in MoM other than he'll just look very young for a very long time). Can withstand a lot of pain but still feels it - for example, if he breaks his leg it will still take time to heal but he will be able to walk on it almost immediately. He can take 300 lashes and still walk afterwards. That sort of thing. It'll just hurt like a bitch.
- ENHANCED STRENGTH: Not talking Superman here, but he can lift two people off the ground by their collars. Because who would want to touch anyone otherwise.
- WUXIA-STYLE JUMPING: Like many characters in the wuxia tradition, Wangji can jump extraordinary heights and lengths with minimal difficulty. Think Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, basically. In Mom, we're talking approximately two stories up, or 40-60 feet parallel to the ground.
- SWORD TECHNIQUES: Though Lan Zhan's sword Bichen isn't magic in itself, when Lan Zhan uses it, it can do far more than the average sword. It can send shockwaves out when he slashes with it in order to hit objects over a dozen feet away (not quite enough force to knock someone over), and he can throw it up to 60 feet, hit something, and have it return to his hand. If he stands on his sword he can fly on it for long distances. Look, I don't make the rules, and yes, it looks very stupid.
- SILENCING SPELL: Specific to the Lan Clan, Wangji can silently cast a spell on a person that causes their lips to shut for 30 minutes, until he lifts the spell, or until they force their lips open (like ripping your lips apart if they are glued together, it'll hurt and bleed but otherwise be fine). This will ONLY be used with player permission.
- SPIRIT HEALING: Lan Wangji can push some of his spiritual energy into another to help the healing process. This only works to stabilize a person - it won't heal wounds, but it will stop them from succumbing to them, ease their pain, and grant clarity of thought.
MAGIC GUQIN
Not actually a magic instrument, but rather he can use magic by playing a guqin (a type of zither). When playing his guqin, Lan Zhan can use different musical techniques / songs in order to achieve certain affects:
- CHORD ASSASSINATION TECHNIQUE: This is literally just strumming the instrument fast and making a shock wave. It's only really powerful enough to knock people over, though weak/unpowered people might be knocked out just from the force with which they hit the ground.
- SONG OF CALMING: This song can ease the minds and calm the spirits of people, as well as calm aggressive creatures like monsters and zombies for a short time, making them freeze for up to one minute. Very strong creatures may not be effected at all.
- INQUIRY: Using his instrument, Lan Zhan can communicate with the dead (obviously only in Jeopardy) but more importantly for this game, he can also communicate with the spirits of people who are near-death or in a comatose state.
QUIANKUN POUCH
A little purse-like pouch that basically works like a bag of holding. It can hold up to 5 cubic feet. Objects shrink when he goes to place them inside. Nothing living can be put in the bag. He has a few objects already inside the pouch when he ports in:
- One Sword named "Bichen"
- One seven-stringed guqin named "Wangji"
- Approximately two thousand dollars worth of gold and silver nuggets (this is purely for hilarious rp value of him paying for shit in nuggets in his first few days on earth, and won't replenish once he's spent it. He's gotta keep his sugar daddy status SOMEHOW.)
〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[This is not something Lan Wangji is used to, or comfortable with. Beyond the fact that he comes from a world without any tech of this sort, he also does not like crowds or speaking to groups of people. Really, he prefers not to speak at all. However, at a time like this, he will push past his discomfort.
He is not used to the idea of being unable to face the dangers of the world alone. He's faced countless monsters, demons, spirits. Armies. But this place offers dangers far beyond what he's ever known. And now, for once, he needs to call for help.
The video flicks on. Lan Zhan's face is steady and impassive, despite the hand that presses against the wound at his throat. Despite the blood running dark between his fingers. His gaze is locked on the camera. ]
The gate is broken.
[ Behind him, the porter building, crumbling. His voice is low, each word even and measured, the syllables crisp and distinct. It's not because he's wounded. He just always talks like this. ]
The creature is too great. More swords are required.
[ There is the barest flicker of pain across his face, before he can force his expression still again. ]
Be careful.
[ The feed cuts out. ]
